The Porter Family

Porter’s Original Lotion is the same great, dry skin lotion it has always been, same quality, same legacy, but there is a new chapter to the Porter’s story.

The precursor to Porter’s Original Lotion began in Montana in 1915 with Dr. C. E. Whitehead who compounded a similar formula with camphor, alcohol, glycerin, ammonia and water to be used for workers at a local cement plant to treat dry skin. He passed his formula on to Heber Porter, a Bozeman pharmacist, who started Porter’s Pharmacy in the newly constructed Baxter Hotel in 1931. He began to compound the original formula for Porter’s Lotion, as we know it today. Although Heber Porter died in 1955, the same lotion continued to be compounded in a barrel in various local Bozeman pharmacies until 1994, when the Bungalow Drug, the last to make it, was closing its doors.

Fearing an end of the Porter’s era, Michael Anderson, a fourth generation Porter’s user, and Con and Daphne Gillam of Bozeman purchased the rights and formula to Porter’s Lotion, started Gallatin River Products, and took Porter’s nationwide and to four continents. They continued the same tradition of Porter’s Lotion for dry skin, and added a complete group of family safe skin care products including organic soaps, moisturizers, shaving accessories, an herbal bug repellant, lip balm, muscle rub, household cleaner and laundry soap.

John Hearnsberger, M.D., a retired heart surgeon from Little Rock, Arkansas, began his surgical career in 1973. Daily scrubbing left his hands and arms irritated, red, and dry with an incessant itch. He tried numerous lotion including topical steroids, nothing worked. In 1996, he bought his first bottle of Porter’s lotion, experienced immediate relief, and has used it daily since, even as an aftershave. It worked then and is still working now.

Remember the old Remington Electric Shaver commercial? “I liked it so well, I bought the company.” Well, that is Dr. Hearnsberger’s story, the new chapter in the Porter’s story. Yes, we have a new owner and a new name, Porter’s Lotion, LLC; and a new chapter to the story and even a few ideas for new products. However, the rest is unchanged. Michael Anderson will continue as a consultant, and Mary Mackay, the familiar voice on the telephone will continue as office manager.

In April I had a melanoma removed from my arm: a surgical procedure that required 80 stiches. The plastic surgeon instructed me to wash the area with antibacterial soap for several weeks, which left my arm feeling like sandpaper. Last week I applied Porter's Lotion to my arm and with after only two applications the arm felt as moisturized as the other arm. What a wonderful product!

My (late) husband brought back a bottle of the Original Lotion for me, while on a business trip to Montana, several years ago. He knew that I always complained of dry skin, especially on my back. We all know how hard it is to get lotion of any kind there ! I poured some in a small spray bottle, and then could spray it on my back after showering. Since then, I have been buying the Original Lotion, several bottles at a time, for over 6 years. When winter arrives, I got thru LOTS – in the summer, dry, sunned skin loves it too !

Your Sweet Porters Lotion is the perfect recipe for Summer Tootsies (and heels and elbows) I would DIE without your products!! No kidding.

I am a Hair/Makeup artist here in NYC and I have been using your regular lotions for years... telling everyone that starts a sentence with the word DRY. I tell ever model about your products.

When I use the Egg... ever see that neat little gadget for feet? Google it... ! what I was saying...when I use that gadget on my feet to smooth it out and then put on your Sweet Porters Lotion? wow..it's like I went to the best salon in the world.

Please..keep giving us these fabulous products!!

Last year, I was informed by my doctor that I had a mild case of facial seborrhea (basically, dry flaky patches of skin). I'm a musician and in the public eye, so I didn't consider it mild! I don't like to use prescribed drugs, so I tried just about every OTR product available. Some helped, some didn't, none of them completely took it away. And, some of them made my face greasy and didn't smell good. Then a friend gave me a bottle of Porter's Lotion for dry skin. I use it once a day (which is very little product) and my face is completely free of the dry, flaky skin. For some reason, it also makes my skin look healthier. Porter's Lotion is the only product that I use on my face and I couldn't be happier with the results.

I live in Colorado where it's very dry. I also like to jump in my hot tub, often once a day. Porter's is the only lotion that keeps my skin soft and from flaking, and yet, doesn't leave scum in my hot tub. I keep a bottle in every guest room and tell my friends that if they wish to use my hot tub, either shower before, or always use Porter's Lotion in stead of heavy, scented creams. The Best!

We bought Porter's Lotion a few years ago from restoration hardware. I love to use it in the winter after I shave my legs. It stings for a minute, but considering how dry my legs usually get, it is well worth a moments twinge. My husband uses it on his hands - it works great on his chapped and cracked skin. I tried to buy some more last week at restoration hardware and was dissappointed that they don't carry it anymore - but then I decided to do a web search and. . .Success! Now that I know were to get more, we won't have to use it so sparingly! Thanks for the great product! Great for men and women.

I have horribly dry skin on my upper arms. While it is considerably worse in the winter, it is a constant battle to keep them hydrated. The only thing I've EVER found that worked was the Porters Original. This is incredible stuff. After one use, I knew I'd found the product that would comfortable all year round. completely non greasy, the only time you even notice it is when you use to much. With it's pleasant scent and easy application, there have been many a winter day that i wouldn't have gotten thru without this stuff. The only thing that has ever worked!
